Strengthening Fire and Carbon Management Across the Kimberley

WORKSHOP ONE: SETTING THE FOUNDATIONS

The KLC is expanding its Carbon and Fire Programs, launching a comprehensive four-year evaluation project to better understand how these initiatives are delivering benefits across the region. Running from December 2024 to December 2028, the project will draw on both quantitative and qualitative data collected through workshops, interviews and on-Country engagement.

A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH TO EVALUATION

  • The evaluation will be developed in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders, including:

  • Ranger groups

  • Prescribed Bodies Corporate (PBCs)

  • Kimberley Aboriginal communities

  • Indigenous and non-Indigenous partner organisations

  • Government agencies and research institutions

A team of local researchers will lead the survey components, ensuring the work is grounded in community knowledge and guided by local priorities.

WORKSHOP ONE: SETTING THE FOUNDATIONS

In September 2025, the first of four evaluation workshops was convened by the KLC, bringing together representatives from the north, central and east Kimberley. We engaged the expertise of Nyikbar Consulting to co-facilitate the workshop.

  • The workshop aimed to:

  • Build evaluation skills for local researchers through active participation

  • Explore how Fire and Carbon projects align with Traditional Owner and PBC aspirations

  • Discuss carbon project responsibilities in relation to caring for Country

  • Identify key consultation areas and develop potential evaluation questions

The primary outcome of Workshop One was a draft set of research questions that will guide the next phase of the project. The second workshop is scheduled to take place by June 2026.
