Working Together to Shape Visitor Management on Mayala Country

The KLC recently supported Mayala Inninalang Aboriginal Corporation (MIAC) and TRC Tourism to deliver a successful two-day workshop with Mayala Traditional Owners. The workshop brought together MIAC Directors and members of the Mayala Healthy Country Committee to explore how visitors can be welcomed and managed on Mayala Country, while also providing space for Traditional Owners to share their aspirations for developing tourism that reflects their culture, values and vision for the future.

The collaboration created an open, constructive environment where people could speak about their priorities, concerns and hopes for tourism on Country.

Feedback from participants highlighted that it was an energising and productive few days, laying strong foundations for ongoing work. KLC will continue to support MIAC in their collaboration with TRC Tourism as planning progresses and to develop a comprehensive Tourism and Visitor Management Strategy for Mayala Country.

TRC Tourism has expressed interest in sharing the positive outcomes of the workshop through their social media channels, including acknowledging KLC’s involvement. The support provided by KLC aligns strongly with the priorities outlined in the Mayala IPA Management Plan - particularly Goal 1 (Caring for Country), Goal 3 (Supporting Culture and People) and Goal 5 (Strengthening Governance and Planning).

This workshop represents an important step in ensuring that tourism on Mayala Country grows in a way that protects cultural values, strengthens community decision-making and creates opportunities for Mayala people now and into the future.
