Senator Malarndirri McCarthy Visits The KLC

During her October visit to Broome, Minister for Indigenous Australians Senator Malarndirri McCarthy sat down with the Kimberley Land Council (KLC) leadership team to discuss key priorities for the region.

The conversation focused on strengthening governance and economic opportunities for Kimberley Aboriginal people. KLC highlighted several pressing issues, including:

Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act reform - current provisions under the CATSI Act are not fit for purpose for native title governance and place an unfair burden on PBCs.

Kimberley Food Relief Strategy – KLC is partnering with Foodbank WA and MG Corporation to establish a food relief hub in Kununurra and seeks ministerial support for this initiative.

Indigenous Ranger Program & Indigenous Protected Area program funding – while recent increases are welcome, challenges remain in implementation and administration.

Economic empowerment – KLC is keen to understand the Minister’s vision for creating pathways that support long-term prosperity for Aboriginal communities.

The meeting reinforced the importance of collaboration between government and Aboriginal organisations to deliver practical solutions for Country, culture and community.
