The Kimberley Land Council (KLC) has welcomed the announcement of a $636 million boost to Indigenous Ranger Program in the 2022 Federal Budget.

KLC CEO Tyronne Garstone said the funding is reflective of the success of Indigenous land management around Australia.

“The funding reflects the excellent work that ranger groups do on country and is an acknowledgement of their invaluable contribution, not only to the environment but also their communities,” he said.

“These programs empower local people to look after country in culturally appropriate ways. Ranger groups play the central role in managing some of Australia’s most pristine and fragile landscapes, but the benefits reach deep into communities with employment and positive social change. It’s a win-win for all Australians. “

Indigenous rangers look after nearly half of Australia’s protected areas and most of the Kimberley region.

“The KLC looks forward to continuing to develop the Kimberley Ranger Network as a world leader in Indigenous land management.”
